| The
Ascon Landfill Site occupies approximately 38 acres in the southern
part of the city of Huntington Beach, California, approximately 0.5 miles
from the Pacific Ocean. |
|
| |
| The site
was used as a disposal facility from 1938 to 1984. Industrial
and oil field waste were disposed there until 1971. From 1971
to 1984 construction debris was disposed at the site. |
| |
| Ascon has 5 existing “lagoons” (waste-filled depressions that collect storm water during the rain season) covering ~30% of the site and 8 pits (3 near the northwest corner and 5 near the southeast corner) that were reportedly filled with industrial waste. Of these pits, only Pit F remains exposed (the others are buried). |
| |
| The Site is fenced, and access is controlled. Security is in cooperation with the City of Huntington Beach Police Department and the Huntington Beach Fire Department. |
